Fabled for its extremes, Laganas is a busy strip development leading off the beach set in lush, green countryside, the heart of agricultural Zakynthos/Zante with fields of vines and olive groves. Laganas a good base for exploring the area.

Bars and their clientele spill out onto the busy high street throughout the night, although loud music is played only inside the clubs late at night.

It's long, gently shelving beach is very attractive, although there are perhaps a few too many sunbeds and beach umbrellas these days! It was once a nesting site for the Loggerhead Sea turtle, but the noise and lights of the resort deter any turtles from coming ashore here now.

This area is suitable for the young and lively who want to dance the night away. Also for families who don't mind some noise from discos and bars. The centre of the resort is not for those who want a quiet or peaceful holiday.

The accommodation is mainly self-catering studios in abundance and a variety of hotels, in the lower categories, as usual where life revolves around the bar.

Laganas is on the S-facing coast, (5½ mls SW of Zakynthos and 3 mls SW of the airport). It is a part of a sweeping bay of mainly flat land, with gentle hills to the west rising eventually to the mountains that line the west coast of the island.

Laganas Bay has the best resort beach on the island. It is nearly five mls long, fairly narrow and with gently shelving light tan sand. Plenty of beachside restaurants and snack bars. Motorised water sports are restricted because turtles use some parts of the bay for nesting.

There are a vast number of tourist shops, minimarkets and a couple of leather and gold shops both of which are specialities of the island.

During the daytime there is not much beyond the beach. Within walking distance of Sarakina mansion ruins and some superb views. There is some horse riding and boat trips to see the turtles.
