Krabi is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country's oldest history of continued settlement. After dating stone tools, ancient colored pictures, heads, pottery and skeletal remains found in the province's many cliffs a caves, it is thought that Krabi has been home to homo sapiens since the period 25,000-35,000 B.C.
Krabi's mountainous physical geography is broken by highlands and plains on the mainland, the provincial administration also covers more than 130 islands big and small in the Andaman. Natural forest cover is chiefly mangrove and Cassia trees. Krabi's sandy clay soil conditions are perfect for a variety of agricultural products, including; Rubber trees, palms, oranges, coconuts, and coffee.
Krabi was previously an established retreat for backpackers, nowadays, more adventurous package tourists are beginning to discover the delights of the region, especially as it has been added to many cruise-ship itineraries. The area suits travellers looking for a relaxing, hassle-free holiday within reach of some of the world's most stunning natural seascapes.
The accommodation is mostly in Krabi Town and is geared towards backpackers. Outside of town, there are several good-quality hotels, some on the beach front which serve the needs of middlemarket package tourists.
Weather in Krabi is typically that of the tropical monsoon, providing the province with just two seasons, the hot season from November to April, and the rainy season from May to October. Moms winds, which change according to season, blow from the southeast, the southwest, and the northeast. Temperatures for the year range between 16.9 and 37.3 degrees Celsius; yearly rainfall averages 2,568.5 Millimeters.
Krabi is in the province of Krabi, on the Andaman Sea, on the west coast of the mainland peninsula (500 mls S of Bangkok. 110 mls E of Phuket by road). Most transfers are from Phuket or Krabi airports. It is set in a region of outstanding natural beauty, many fine beaches and over 130 offshore islands. It is also close to the mouth of the Krabi River.
Krabi is well known for its beaches, Ao Nang beach is a long, white-sand beach stretching to the foot of a prominent limestone range, the most developed beach in the area with a reasonable choice of amenities. Phra Nang comprises 3 beautiful beaches on a remote headland, accessible only by boat and frequented by day-trippers from Krabi, Phi Phi Island and Ao Nang. Numerous other secluded beaches along the coast and on nearby islands.
Shoppping is mainly limited to the usual Thai trinkets, fake watches and T-shirts. Hotel shops provide a good choice of gifts, although more expensive. Krabi Town offers good local shopping opportunities.
Daytime activities mainly consist of snorkelling and diving. There are many fine coral reefs off the coast. Sailing and sea-kayaking are alsopopular, as are walking and hiking in nearby national parks.
The Nightlife is generally quiet with hotels offering occasional live entertainment.
Eating out consists of some pleasant beachside eateries offering a choice of Thai and Western fare. Seafood in the region is particularly good. Krabi Town has a few simple restaurants catering mainly for backpackers.
