One of the youngest resorts on the island, Kolymbia was little more than a collection of farmhouses and a couple of tavernas before its beach was "discovered" in the late 1980s.
It is now a rather scattered resort measuring 1½ mls wide and long, with largely low-rise buildings, a shady eucalyptus-lined central avenue and a growing choice of amenities, although the main attraction is still the beaches, which stretch out either side of the headland.
This area is suited to those seeking a relaxing, low-key holiday and not too bothered about energetic nightlife. There is a good range of hotel facilities also makes it suitable for families. Hiring a car and having your own transport is an advantage as you would get to see the whole of the island..
The Accommodation is mainly hotels of a good standard, the oldest of which was built in 1987.
Kolymbia is on the east coast, halfway between Rhodes Town and Lindos (16 mls SW of Rhodes Town. 19 mls S of the airport). It fronts a sandy coastline on a small bay, surrounded by scrub and farmland, with Mt Tsambica rising to the south.
There is one sandy main beach with sunbeds, parasols and water sports available. On the other side of the headland is a smaller, quieter beach with a taverna and basic snack bar.
There is a reasonable range of tourist shops selling very similar wares. There are minimarkets in the area which supply everyday needs.
During the daytime there are beach and water-based activities, including windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, banana boats and pedalloes. Other activities include cycling, and a 18-hole golf course at nearby Afandou.
Nightlife for this resort is restricted to a few bars and tavernas, 1 disco, otherwise, it is allhotel based.
There is a selection of informal snack bars and family-run tavernas offering mainly Greek cuisine.
