Holiday guide Kemer

Created from nothing with the aid of World Bank finance, Kemer is a small town by the sea. Building has been subject to fairly tight controls, resulting in a pleasant but sanitised resort. It is pricey and decidedly un-Turkish; the only people here are tourists and those who aim to profit from them.

The more recent spurt of development has been along the stretch of coast a few mls N in and around the pleasant seaside hamlet of Beldibi, with its own handful of informal restaurants, minimarkets, a post office and a few jewellery shops (but precious little else).

It is no place to find Byzantine bazaars or explore Roman ruins. Development here, particularly accommodation, spreads S, straddling the local coast road, and includes the beach area of Goynuk. Club and complex developments are continuing to sprout up at the rate of two or three a year. Kemer itself also has a modern, well-equipped marina.

This resort is better suited to family beach holidays than sightseeing, it is a fairly tame resort with little happening, but in lovely surroundings. Particularly popular with Germans.

The middle category is packed with small and medium-sized hotels; the other over-representation is the all-inclusive complex.

Kemmer is 27 miles south of Antalya, and 6 miles from Beldibi. (32 mls from airport). Flat, wooded valley bottom interrupting a continuous wall of spectacular, soaring mountains.

There is a gritty beach fronts the town itself; other longer stretches, often quiet, continue north towards Antalya. Coast guards patrol the beach, and the sea is safe for swimming.

Shopping here is comparatively expensive and has a limited choice, though most needs can be met. The more serious shopper would be better to make the short trip to Antalya.

During the daytime it is so low-key it's almost off the scale. There are no sights in this purpose-built town, though it is pleasant enough to stroll the marina and main street.

The nightlife here is quite lively in the high season, with some late bars, a disco or three and even several opera and ballet festivals.

Eating out here is unexciting on the whole and rather contrived to suit the demands of the tourist (or the Turkish interpretation thereof).
