This lovely old fishing village is penned into a small space by mountains, so accelerating development can only spread sideways. The heart of the village is a cluster of traditional, wood-balconied stone houses and some modern reconstructions.
The harbour is full of yachts and ringed with fish restaurants. On the opposite side of the bay is an overflow area of very upmarket hotels, linked to Kalkan proper by taxi only. In general, this is a quiet resort with a more upmarket image and feel than neighbouring Kas. In addition to a growing following of young scuba-diving enthusiasts, the resort generally attracts mature couples and families looking for a quiet holiday in a pretty, reasonably unspoiled setting.
There is a mix of small, family-run pensions (often in attractive old or old-style stone houses) and huge hotels which have been more thoughtfully designed than in the bigger coastal resorts. Some particularly stylish, medium-sized properties.
Kalkan is In the very south west of Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast (50 mls SE of Fethiye town, 89 mls SE of Dalaman airport. It is on a steep hillside descending to rocky shore and backed by rugged, pine-clad mountains.
Kalkan has no beach to speak of, although there are a few rocky stretches of shore on the outskirts. Lovely Patara Beach, with 10 mls of sand, is 25 mls away, reachable by regular dolmus (minibus).
There are some fairly expensive artisan and tourist gift shops selling high-quality goods and specialising in ceramics and carpets. Minimarkets provide holidaymaking necessities.
During the daytime there are yacht cruises, scuba diving, visiting nearby beaches or sightseeing excursions.
The nightlife here is limited to a handful of bars, with several competing to play music at the loudest possible volume; promenading around the harbour. Livelier Kas is a ½-hr bus ride away.
The harbour is ringed with pricey fish restaurants. The town centre has a clutch of small restaurants and 1 larger option offering local dishes. Little international cuisine available.
