Holiday guide Islantilla

In the south of Europe, lapped by the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and only a few kilometres from Portugal, lies Islantilla a new tourist resort located in an area with more than 3,000 hours of sun a year, an average temperature of 19 degrees and a wide range of leisure options.

The resort has more than 20km of fine white beaches that contrast with the green of a superb 27-hole golf course and also features a magnificent shopping centre. Islantilla fosters a modern concept of tourism that makes the most of its natural resources and expertly blends activity and relaxation.

Of the natural riches in the area the marshes and the coastal pinewood of Isla Cristina stand out along with the marshes of the Piedras River and the stunning "flecha del Rompido". All of this speaks of an area of special ecological interest where there are plenty of opportunities for activity tourism, distinguished by the quality of the services and its harmony with the environment.

This resort is predominantly an area favoured by Spanish tourists from Madrid and the north of the country but only for the high season months of July and Aug. The rest of the summer season is dominated equally by Germans and British with a few Portuguese and Scandinavians. Mainly couples and families seeking an escape from Spain's louder resorts. Also popular with golfers, serious sporting types and nature lovers.

There is only a few hotels on the beach and one on the golf course, others are scheduled to follow. Five apartment complexes operate commercially. La Antilla has 1 hotel on the beach.

Islantilla is on the north west Atlantic coast of Andalucia in the province of Huelva. It is only 15 mls E of Ayamonte and the Portuguese border, 85 mls W of Seville and its airport, 45 mls E of Faro and its airport, 22 mls W of the provincial capital of Huelva, 7 mls E of Isla Cristina and 4 mls SW of Lepe, its shared administrative centres.

It is situated on a flat, south facing coastal strip of wide, sandy beach backed by sand dunes; the golf course occupies a low hill behind the resort. There are extensive areas of salt marshes (preserved nature sites) lie within a few miles east and west along the coast.

In Islantilla you will be able to play golf in an exclusive location, practise most types of water sports, go for walks, go on excursions, dance till the sun comes up or witness an amazing sunset.

You will be able to meet its people, familiarise yourself with its customs, its gastronomy and experience the charm of two pueblos, Lepe and Isla Cristina that help make Islantilla an ideal place to have a good time all year round.

The beach is a wide, continuous 12-mile stretch of fine golden sand from Isla Cristina all the way past Islantilla and La Antilla as far as Nueva Umbria and the end of the El Rompido sand spit.

There is one established shopping centre opposite the central square of Plaza Manuel Camacho has a reasonable range of essential outlets for tourists. A second newer shopping area can be found at the back of the golf course requires transport to be useful.

During the daytime the star turns are the beach and the 27-hole golf course. The former has sailing, canoeing, surfing with or without a kite, dive school and crewed boat rental for fishing or just for fun as well as various other water sports. There is more golf towards Lepe.

The nightlife here is mainly limited to the hotels in the resort, there is a 5-screen cinema in the shopping centre. La Antilla has lots of bars, some with live music; local discos at El Terron (5 mls).
