Holiday guide Isla Canela

Isla Canela, a natural island joined by a bridge to Ayamonte (Huelva), a town with the purest Andalusian enchantment. Isla Canela is located in the south-west of Spain, between the Andalusia Atlantic and the Portuguese Algarve, just in the frontier between Andalusia and the Portuguese Algarve. It shares in the charm of both areas and all their advantages. Isla Canela is a great tourist project located on an island connected by a bridge, to the town of Ayamonte.

You can enjoy 7 km of beach with fine, golden sand, a 17 holes golf club, a marina, a commercial center, etc. You can enjoy activities like sailing, canoeing, motor boats, tennis, fishing, diving, golf, etc. Isla Canela is easily accessible from any part of Europe as there are two airports, Seville airport (160 Km by motorway A-49 Huelva - Sevilla) and Faro airport in Portugal ( 50 Km crossing the international bridge that unites Spain+Portugal.

Isla Canela is one of the largest European tourist developments, with an area of 1,760 Ha, 7 Kms of fine sandy beaches, navigable canals, a cared-for natural setting and an exceptional climate.

This is predominantly an area favoured by Spanish tourists from Madrid and the north of the country but only for the high season months of July and Aug. The rest of the summer season is dominated equally by Germans and British but a lot of Portuguese visit, if only for the day.

There is only 5 high quality hotels on the island with at least one more planned. All the rest of the development here is given over to equally upmarket apartment complexes all built in similar Andalusian Moorish style. One hotel has a self-catering option.

Isla Canela is on the extreme north west Atlantic coast of Andalucia, in the province of Huelva, right on the border with Portugal. (it is 95 mls W of Seville and its airport; 36 mls E of Faro (Portugal) and its airport. 59 mls W of the provincial capital of Huelva). It is at the mouth of the Guadiana river, which forms the border with the Portuguese Algarve; on the river's east bank. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow waterway and linked to Ayamonte by a single bridge.

There is a wide strip of fine golden sand runs the length of the south shore of the island for just over 4 miles. It is backed by sand dunes in just the same manner as the whole length of the Costa de la Luz but lacking the shade-giving pines common elsewhere. Plenty of facilities in front of the hotels with sunbeds, sun umbrellas, bar/restaurants, showers etc.

During the daytime the beach is a favourite and the real reason most overseas visitors come. There is a golf course on the north shore plus others within a reasonable drive. The marina is great for pleasure craft. Take a stroll round the old fishing village of Punta del Morales will put your luxury accommodation into focus, otherwise it's watching the builders and the remorseless erection of more and more concrete.

The nightlife here offers not much other than the organised entertainments in the hotels and maybe a bit of live music in a bar, it's a case of tell us if you find any; Ayamonte comes to the rescue again with a more vibrant nocturnal scene including discos and some flamenco.

There are a few restaurants in the shopping centre at Punta del Moral. A few more at Isla Canela Beach. Both locations have "chiringuitos" (shack restaurants) on the beach. Plenty more variety at Ayamonte.
