Holiday guide Ipsos

North of Corfu Town is a string of busy beach resorts, each one merging into the next. One of the liveliest is Ipsos , where most people go for the nightlife. This resort can get pretty wild at the height of the summer, and the beach for many is just a place to recuperate the next day.

In Ipsos you'll find just as many restaurants serving British grub as serving Greek food, and numerous British-style pubs amongst the clubs and cocktail bars. So don't expect a taste of the real Greece, but the local people are friendly to visitors and know how to give everyone a good time.

Ipsos and its neighbouring resort, Pyrgi, are situated on a wide, beautiful bay. Together they have been dubbed the Golden Mile. The long, narrow beach that curves round the bay is a mixture of sand and shingle and offers excellent water sports facilities.

There is plenty to see besides beaches and bars to keep you amused. Explore the villages and towns inland or sail round the coast to visit Corfu's highest spot, Mount Pantokrator. Even if you never leave the resort, you're sure of a good time in Ipsos.

Ipsos, although located in a scenic setting, with fine views along the coast to Corfu Town and green hills inland, the resort itself is brash and noisy. It mainly comprises a broad, straight main road just above the beach, with the "strip" packed along the inland side.

This road is something of a speed track, which makes access to the beach hazardous for pedestrians, although traffic warning lights and some pedestrian crossings have been installed. There is a quieter but no less gaudy resort road leading inland to Pirgi, which along with the neighbouring village of Analipsis is being quietly swallowed up by the main resort area.

With most of the action facing the beach, Ipsos is very much a resort for the youth market, catering almost exclusively to the British. The accommodation here varies from self catering to hotels with a number of camp sites. All Accommodation is generally in the lower categories.

Ipsos is on the north east coast, opposite Albania and the Greek mainland. (it is 15 km NorthWest of Corfu Town and the airport). It is located in a scenic setting, with fine views along the coast to Corfu Town and green hills inland. It mainly comprises a broad, straight main road just above the beach, with the "strip" packed along the inland side.

The long, narrow shingle beach is situated immediately below the fast main road and curves into a tiny harbour. Its main appeal lies in the availability of water sports, which include pedalloes, para-gliding, water-skiing and windsurfing.

There is the usual beach supplies and souvenirs; much better shopping to be found in Corfu Town.

During the daytime it is all mainly beach and water-based activities, including fun rides, water slide and water sports. The nightlife here offers video bars, cocktail bars, British pubs and discos.

There is a range of fast food, "pub grub" and more local-style tavernas along with a Chinese and Indian.
