As you drive from Fethiye up the mountain to the charming village of Hisaronu, not only do you take in the beautiful scenery but on a hot summers day you can notice a welcoming difference in temperature as you climb.
The first area you pass through is Ovacik which is mainly hotels and apartments and one or two shops, then you come into Hisaronu village itself. The resort is popular with British visitors and the shops, restaurants and bars cater extensively for the needs of all age groups. There is plenty of accommodation in the village, from pensions to five star hotels, most of which have their own swimming pool, ideal for those who want a lazy relaxing holiday.
For those who want a more active holiday there is Olu Deniz, which has the most photographed beach in Turkey and is only a ten minute journey by the regular Dolmus service down the mountain, where you will be able to find a variety of watersports ie.- water ski-ing, para sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, pedaloes etc.
The accommodation here is generally of good-quality, smaller hotels, aparthotels and guest houses in Hisaronu itself, some along the main street and in the winding, sloping roads either side. Many are spread along the main road in the village of Ovacik, some on the more rural hillsides to the SE and down the valley to the NE. Most are firmly 3-star, offering traditional styling despite modern roots. Some apartments and pensions. Larger, well-equipped options off the main road to Olu Deniz.
Hisaronu is near the south west coast of Turkey (7 mls S of Fethiye town; 2 mls N of Olu Deniz. 48 mls SE of Dalaman airport by steep, winding, often scenic road). It is nestled among pine trees on high ground above the beach and bay at Olu Deniz; the Babadag Mountains rise behind.
The cooler temperature in Hisaronu welcomes you back from a hard day at the beach and offers a well earned rest before your evenings entertainment. Hisaronu is a recently established resort and although it has grown in the last few years it still retains a friendly vibrant atmosphere. It is an ideal place for walkers as there are plenty of winding paths through the forests with wonderful views, and of course a visit to Kayakoy (the ghost village), where the Greeks once lived.
For the braver of you there is paragliding from the top of Babadag mountain and landing on the beach. If you prefer a more relaxing day on the water there are a selection of boat trips available from both Olu Deniz and Fethiye.Olu Deniz beach sweeps round in a vast crescent of coarse sand and shingle to the Lagoon, which is a National Park area now and a small charge (50p) is levied for entry. The night life in Hisaronu can be as lively or as quiet as you make it,you have plenty of choice. A must for shoppers is the market in Fethiye, where you will find the best bargains as it is the biggest Bazaar in the area.Fethiye itself is worth a visit to take in the history of the place, or to have a romantic walk round the harbour.
There is a good selection of small shops and stalls selling jewellery, clothing, footwear, water-sports gear and beachwear, as well as local products such as sweets, spices, glassware and textiles. There are numerous small well-stocked minimarkets throughout town. The Local market (Mondays) with everything from cooking ware, herbs and spices to a plethora of fake designer labels. More serious shoppers should head to Fethiye town, which has a larger covered market (Tuesdays).
There is an array of restaurants, cafes and snack bars. Options include local and Turkish dishes (including meze, tasty samples of local specialities), Chinese, Indian, seafood, steaks and grills, pizza and even a vegetarian restaurant. Kebabs and burgers (with one international burger joint). Of course, there's the "everything with chips" and full English breakfast options, too. Most restaurants and bars are concentrated in the main shopping street, with a number of choices spread along the road between Hisaronu and Ovacik.
