Holiday guide Hanioti

This is a peaceful, low-rise tourist village sprawling 1¼ mls along the main road and spreading 500 yds to the sea. Hanioti is devoted almost entirely to the needs of tour groups, but is by no means brash or overpowering.

In fact, there is a surprisingly relaxing ambience that is somewhat contagious. Although it is a modern resort, its pretty central square, winding streets and traditional-style, red-roofed buildings suggest greater age. One strength is a traffic-free frontage to a pretty beach with a pine-shaded park at one end.

It is a relaxing venue for groups of most ages, it is one of the most popular resorts on the peninsula. Visitors are predominantly British and Scandinavian holidaymakers, plus hordes of Greeks from mid-June to the end of Aug.

The accommodation here is mid-range hotels in the majority, with a few leaning towards the luxury and budget ends of the spectrum. The grounds tend to have rather unruly greenery, but it adds to the atmosphere.

Hanioti is on the east coast of the Kassandra Peninsula of Halkidiki (62 mls SE of Thessaloniki; 57 mls SE of the airport by reasonably well-maintained road). It is situaed on flat land gently sloping to the NE-facing shore.

The beach here is long and at least 25 yds deep. It is made of coarse, pale sand and scattered pebbles (pebbles more in evidence towards the edges of resort). It Gently shelves into calm, clear waters. There is a good view of Sithonia Peninsula opposite. Sun loungers and sun umbrellas available for hire.

There area many souvenir shops selling ceramics, jewellery, leather, clothes and tourist trinkets; no real local specialities except honey. There area has a few local supermarkets. For more serious shopping, plan a day trip to Thessaloniki.

During the daytime there are beach and water-based activities, including windsurfing, water-skiing, parasailing, scuba diving and pedalloes. There is also facilities for minigolf and go-karting. Take strolls in the surrounding countryside.

The nightlife here offers music bars (including karaoke) and tavernas as well as the more stage-managed entertainments offered by larger hotels.

There area opportunities to treat the palate, with the odd pastry shop and ice-cream parlour supplementing the ubiquitous tavernas, pizza restaurants and occasional international choice.
