Holiday guide Greenwich

Overview:

Greenwich, England defines both time and place for the whole world.  All time is measured relative to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and all places have a latitude (their distance North or South of the Equator) and a longitude (their distance East or West of the Greenwich Meridian).

So whether you are flying an aircraft, sailing a ship or just planning to meet up using your GPS remember that is measured from Greenwich, England.

Greenwich not only is a historical place in terms of time and location, but English heritage and the monarchy had a big part in Greenwich, with the area being the birthplace of Henry VIII and his famous daughters Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth I.

The area as a holiday destination is not packed with excitement or life but is a good place to stay to see the rest of Central London.

The new millennium officially started in Greenwich, England on 1st January 2001; The World's biggest dome was built on the Meridian Line (The Prime Meridian of the World) in Greenwich to celebrate this historic event. The Dome opened its doors on 1st January 2000 but despite its purpose as a one year demonstration of exhibitions of past and future, the millenium dome closed on 31st December 2001 with less than half of the expected visitors taking a visit to the dome's attractions and exhibitions, resulting in a significant financial loss.

Each Spring Greenwich sees the start of the London Marathon.

Just across the River Thames is the modern Docklands development with Canary Wharf and London City Airport.

Locality:

Greenwich is located on the banks of the river Thames in Central London.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Stand with one foot in the East and one in the West astride the Greenwich Meridian and set your watch by the red 'Time Ball' that drops each day at 1300hrs precisely and has done so for 170 years. A recent addition is an electronic news bulletin board, which transmits the news headlines from around the world.

Other nautical attractions include the National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark (a 19th Century tea clipper) and the Gipsy Moth, a tiny yacht which became a potent symbol of British sailing heritage  after being sailed solo around the world.

There's a laid-back feel to Greenwich. It's the sort of place that you can while away several hours browsing market stalls - crafts, antiques, records, bric a brac and, most famously, vintage clothing. Then you might pop into a riverside pub for lunch and find yourself still there in the evening listening to some mellow jazz.
