Gouvia is around 2 miles long and ¾ ml wide, and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, offering both lively nightlife and quiet hillside spots.
However, the centre itself has a rather cramped feel and there is a one-way system in operation along the main strip. The resort has a definite nautical ambience: it boasts a large yacht marina and was once an historic Venetian naval base, at one end of the beach you will find a ruined Venetian arsenal and the precariously beached wreck of a yacht. Adjoining Gouvia is the quiet village of Kontokali while 1 ml inland is Danila, a purpose-built, Greek-style village where folklore performances are organised for evening trips.
The area caters for the middlemarket, without extremes of either nightlife or isolation. It is currently favoured by German visitors. There is a range of hotels with a few in each category. There are some self-catering units towards the Kontokali end of town.
Gouvia is on the east coast, opposite the Greek mainland. (it is 5½ mls NW of Corfu Town and airport). It is at the centre of an almost completely enclosed, natural bay. There are olive and citrus groves and lush hillsides lie to the west.
The beaches are narrow sand and shingle in several small, shallow coves, no more than 150 yds from the town centre; they can become crowded and mud can sometimes be a problem. Beach facilities include sunbeds and sun umbrellas, showers and toilets.
Shopping here is limited, although tourist shops sell local honey, ouzo, olive-wood trinkets and beach wear. There is a large discount store on main road. Corfu Town is the place to go for more serious shopping.
During the daytime there is beach and water-based activities including paragliding, diving and a variety of other water sports. There is also boat trips, horse riding, and exploring the local countryside.
The nightlife offers lively tavernas, cocktail and sports bars; discos, which are mainly along the main road.
There are some good-value snack bars, along with Greek tavernas serving traditional fare, pasta restaurants and pizzerias, even Chinese and Tex-Mex options. British cuisine is widely available.
