Overview:
Now one of the most popular resorts on the lake this former medieval fishing village, part of which still remains has a maze of narrow streets full of boutiques and souvenir shops which visitors can explore. The pedestrianised tree-lined promenade has a vast selection of cafes and restaurants with street entertainers and small art exhibitions.
Locality:
Garda is 75 mls from Milan, 105 from Venice airport and is set on the E shores of the lake bearing the same name. On the middle stretch of the Riviera degli Olivi where the lake opens out after the promontory of San Vigilio and the Bay of Mermaids. It looks across an open bay and the widest part of the lake.
Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:
Garda is mostly suited to mid to upmarket, couples young and old. The area has a wide selection of villas and flats to rent. Ranging from small, family-run 2- to 4-stars. The lower range tend to be situated in town, some overlooking the lake with the better quality ones further out.
There are two pebbled beaches, one partly artificial. Both with beach bars and usually crowded. There is a beach at San Vigilio, 2½ mls N of Garda, that charges a fee.
Shoppers have a Friday all-day market on offer with stalls along the promenade. Hundreds of souvenirs, leather and fashionable clothes throughout the area.
Activities in Garda centre around ample water sports and sailing e.g. water-skiing, windsurfing, pedalo and motorboats for hire. Hinterland walks are popular and there are bicycles for hire. Romanesque churches and Olive Museum in area are also popular tourist spots. By night the nearest disco is in Bardolino. Some bars and hotels have occasional singers.
If you're looking to dine out there are many cafes, restaurants and pizzerias, especially on the lake front. Lake fish here is a speciality.
Getting around the area is fairly easy with an hourly bus service to Bardolino, Malcesine, Riva and Verona. Regular car ferry, hydrofoil and boat service along with ample taxi's..
Local excursions consist of trips to Venice by coach (long day), Verona (day), tour of the lake (day), Dolomites (day).
