Holiday guide Encamp

Overview:

Although less than 2 mls in length, Encamp qualifies as a town by Andorran standards. It is primarily residential, used as a base by visiting skiers and little more, although a modern cable car provides a direct link to the slopes on the outskirts of town. Buildings are predominantly grey stone, with the town hall (a hi-tech glass tower in the centre) looking markedly out of place. The resort boasts a superbly equipped indoor sports centre on one side of the valley and the country's motor museum.

Locality:

Encamp is located in the centre of Andorra, 3 mls NE of Andorra la Vella, 130 mls S of Toulouse airport (France), 145 mls N of Barcelona airport (Spain). It is set in a fairly wide valley, hugging the main road and river.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Encamp is ideal for older couples looking for quiet evenings. Not recommended for those seeking doorstep skiing. Very large camping and caravanning fraternity all year. Many French and Spanish own flats and apartments here that they use at the weekend and for longer holidays during the winter.

Accommodation consists of two dozen or so hotels, of only average standard compared with elsewhere in Europe. Abundant, often privately owned apartments around the centre.

Shopping is rather limited, comprising the odd sportswear outlet, perfumeries and a couple of supermarkets. However, Andorra la Vella's wider tax-free choice is only 3 mls away.

Entertainment is fairly unsophisticated and generally low-key. A couple of small public discos; a few more hotel-based options.

There is limited options for 'eating out', with a couple of upmarket establishments. For a choice of international cuisine, the capital is only a short bus ride away.

Getting around is fairly easy with regular buses run to skiing at Soldeu (7 mls), but the cost is not included in the ski-pass. The capital is within easy reach via bus throughout the day and into the evening. There is no proper taxi service.
