Don't miss the Royal Pavilion, home of King George IV, and probably the most exotic, extravagant royal palace in Europe. Stroll along the Victorian Pier and the beachfront, where stylish bars and cafés spill out onto the curved paving, jostling for space with surfer shops, giant sculptures, buskers, fresh fish and artists' studios. For shopping, try The Lanes, smart and chic, and the bohemian North Laine, both good for antiques and designer clothes.

There are museums and galleries galore, special events throughout the year from car rallies to carnivals, and England's largest arts festival in May. For nightlife, there's theatre, music, dance and comedy, lively pubs and bars and around 400 restaurants. Today's Brighton is a combination of a good old fashioned seaside resort and a cultural centre offering trendy eating places and nightlife. This duel identity ensures that Brighton has lots to offer all age groups.

Brighton's nightlife is particularly lively and the town is has a popular gay and lesbian nightclub scene. There are also a range of cultural attractions and activities and good shopping areas. The Lanes is the most famous shopping area in Brighton with a mixture of cafes and small shops selling a mixture of art, antiques, jewelery, clothes, records or just plain junk.

The beach and seafront are, of course, very popular during the summer, especially at weekends when the town is visited by throngs of Londoners. The pebble beach stretches from Hove in the west to the nudist beach by the Marina. Palace Pier is a popular visitor attraction, with traditional seaside offerings such as candyfloss, doughnuts, fish and chips and amusement arcades.
