Located 20 minutes from La Romana is the town of "Bayahibe". Originally a fishing village it offer a typical Caribbean atmosphere. The excellent beach here is open to the public, and there are many restaurants and bars that are moderately priced.
Visitors can easily get to the off-shore wildlife preserves of Catalina and Saona, which houses the National Park of the East. This park, is the focus of international archaeological interest as well as media attention as scientists and anthropologists continue to unearth traces of the first inhabitants on the island the Taino Tribe.
Locality:
Bayahibe is situated at the SE end of the country, on the Caribbean S coast. 16 mls SE of La Romana. 66 mls SE of Santo Domingo airport.
Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:
Bayahibe is most suited to middle and upmarket all-inclusive types not requiring local flavour or a sophisticated infrastructure beyond the confines of their hotels. Accommodation here is very much centred around the all-inclusive market in isolated positions beside the beach. The Bayahibe and Dominicus beaches combine into a 6-ml stretch of gently shelving, soft, white sand studded with mature palms, broken only by Bayahibe village's short rocky shore. Bathing in front of hotel complexes is partially marred by inshore rocks but protected by the offshore reef. All properties provide extensive water-based activities, especially diving and snorkelling. Excursions include: full day boat trips to Saona and Catalina islands; East National Park including caves with pre-Columbian petroglyphs; visit to working sugar-cane mill; Altos de Chavon, artists' village with regional archaeological museum and amphitheatre; scenic tour of Rio de Chavon, where Apocalypse Now and King Kong were filmed; Santo Domingo.
