Holiday guide Barbati

Overview:

After passing Ipsos and Pirgi, heading N, there is a dramatic change of scenery as the winding road leads uphill to Barbati's impressive setting. The resort comprises apartments, tavernas and villas along a ¼-ml stretch on the uphill side of the main road, with the beach well below. The coast road is not busy, but requires caution owing to sharp bends and lack of pavements.

Locality:

Located towards the N end of the E coast, just as the island widens (12 mls N of Corfu Town and the airport). Barbati clings to steep, green slopes of magnificent Mt Pantokrator where they plunge to the sea. Fine views across the bay towards Corfu Town.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Barbati is suited mostly to families with older children not requiring evening entertainment; the steep terrain means it is perhaps not a good choice for small children or those with mobility difficulties. Nature lovers also tend to enjoy this area. The beach here is 1 ml of long, white shingle, 200 yds from the coast road; it is sheltered and safe, but shelves quite steeply. Reached by foot or car, with a rough track leading steeply down. Sunbeds and sun umbrellas are for hire; water sports, pedalloes and dinghies are also available. Accommodation consists of a handful of self-catering apartments and mainly small hotels. Excursions here tend to consist of half day tours exploring the dramatic coastline and mountains inland and boat or walks to Ipsos. Full day excursions generally include Corfu Town for sightseeing and shopping.
