Overview:
Generally regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Austria surrounded by meadows and forests and is set against a beautiful backdrop of the Gratspitz peaks. It has over 1000 beds in 10 hotels, pensions, B&B's and Inns. Alpbach has 160 km of well-maintained hiking routes that offers some breathtaking views of the Alpbach valley. Alpbach first opened its doors to tourism in the 1930s not long after the first road opened, joining the village to the outside world. It is a friendly, compact resort made up of centuries-old, traditionally built, dark-timber houses which straggle up the valley sides for around ¾ ml beyond the main road. The roads around the village are generally steep, winding and often narrow, with the main through road only just wide enough for a bus. Most of the shops and entertainment are situated at the village centre, clustered around the elegantly spired church. The centre is a restricted parking zone.
Locality:
Located in the W of Austria, in E-central Tyrol. 30 mls NE of Innsbruck. 85 mls SW of Salzburg and its airport. 130 mls SE of Munich (Germany) and its airport. Alpbach is positioned on a S-facing shelf at the end of the quiet Alpbach Valley, just 6 mls off the Inn Valley motorway.
Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:
Alpbach is a good family resort, equally suitable for couples and small groups. Caters for all budgets up to refined sophistication. Skiing is mainly intermediate; beginners and advanced are catered for but some might find the slopes limited. Accommodation here is ranged from high-standard, 4-star hotels to charming, unsophisticated, friendly B&B chalets.
The village is very popular for skiing: 3,300 ft. Highest lift: 6,600 ft. Snow here tends to disappear from the S-facing village and slopes long before that of the N-facing slopes of Wiedersbergerhorn. Movable snow cannons ensure snow on the Boglerfeld slope, extending the season in the village. 28 mls of runs: 5 mls of blue runs, 15½ mls of red, 2½ mls of black and 5 mls of "ski-tour" trails. Frequent ski-bus shuttle (free to lift-pass holders) allows easy access to both Wiedersberger Horn gondola and lifts at the neighbouring hamlet of Inner Alpbach. There is also a regular post-bus service. Nearest train stations are at Brixlegg (accessible from village via bus) and Wogl (accessible via taxi only). Entertainment and activity in Alpbach include curling, sleigh rides, ice-skating, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, winter hiking (44 mls of trails), 2 toboggan runs, sledding; public indoor swimming pool with sauna. Good choice of hiking trails, lake walks and mountain biking in summer, plus white-water rafting, kayaking, tube riding, paragliding and summer glacier skiing. By night there are plenty of apres-ski options, including bars and pub, disco and disco/bar; generally unsophisticated. Torchlit hikes, night skiing and floodlit snowboarding are also available.
