Holiday guide Ahungalla

Overview:

The setting is idyllic - a long stretch of unspoiled palm fringed beach on the South West Coast beside the Indian Ocean. Ahungalla is an ancient fishing hamlet and a tiny shanty village oblivious to the major 5-star hotel cocooned on the nearby beach.

Locality:

Ahungalla is situated on the SW coast, 49 mls S of Colombo and 73 mls S of Bandaranaike international airport (10 mls S of Bentota, 25 mls NW of Galle). Ahungalla is positioned on a flat narrow coastal strip surrounded by arable farmland and paddy fields.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Sri Lankan handicraft Centre - on the left handside of Galle road 10km from Ahungalla you will find the centre where you can see basket weavers at work. Don't miss the frantis market on Tuesdays for good bargains.

Victor Hasselblad Turtle Hatchery - situated in Kosgoda it is Sri Lanka's origional turtle hatchery. open daily 6am-6pm

Ambagahapityia Welitara - a Buddhist Templ with unique architecture because it was built during the time of the dutch and the style was heavily influenced by Dutch architecture.
